About our Wetlands

Just one way we are reducing our impact on the environment, so we can continue to grow plants for the gardeners of today and the future of the environment.

Mansfield’s Propagation Nursery has gone to great lengths to reduce our annual potable water use. After 10 years in the planning our water recycling system was completed in late 2006. After purchasing an allocation of A class recycled effluent water from the Carrum treatment plant, we treat this water by running it through a series of reed beds and wetlands to remove the high levels of nutrients. Once this water is cleaned and used to irrigate the nursery it is recaptured through an extensive underground drainage system and diverted back to the start of the wetland for reuse over and over again.
Below is a chart of our water savings from 05/06 to 07/08. The figures from the year 08/09 are our predicted savings after we have recently expanded the capacity of our growing facilities by over 50% without the use of any more potable water.”
